( The Parish of Kilronan ) - History of the Parish

The Parish falls into three sections each with its own Church and School(s). The population of each section would be as follows:-
Keadue about 270 , Arigna about 480 and Ballyfarnon about 200 or a total population of some 950 people. It is difficult to arrive at an accurate number because some people are working away from home and may or may not be considered as having a permanent residence in the Parish.

Each section of the parish has its own unique "personality" with its own church and schools. Keadue is the centre of Parish
administration and Keadue Church is the Parish Church because the old abbey of Ronan ( Cill Ronan) from which the parish got its name
is beside Keadue. Arigna is associated with mining, and coal mining
in particular, because iron first and then coal was taken out of the hills of Arigna over the past 400 years. The last mines only closed in 1990.
Ballyfarnon was the area of the two "Big Houses" Castle Tenison
and Alderford house. The Landlord of the region lived in the Castle . Alderford House was the home of the MacDermott Roe family with whom Turlough O'Carolan , the last of the Irish Bards and Ireland's best known musician, lived.
